A systematic literature review of students’ problems in solving systems of linear inequalities in two variables

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the problems students encounter in solving systems of linear inequalities in two variables, including difficulties, errors, misconceptions, and learning obstacles. The method used in this research is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on 13 articles from national journals, international journals, and international seminar proceedings published between 2015 and 2025, obtained through Google Scholar. The findings identified four main categories of student problems: (1) conceptual problems, such as understanding inequality signs; (2) procedural problems, related to steps and calculations; (3) representational problems, including difficulties in drawing graphs and determining solution regions; and (4) modelling problems, namely the inability to accurately translate the problems into mathematical models. These findings suggest the need for more targeted instructional strategies to help students overcome and prevent various learning problems in solving systems of linear inequalities in two variables.
